Did you kill these animals?
No. There's no need to harm any animal or insects for supplies. There are plenty of sources to find animal remains and insects. I simply up-cycle other animals trash.

Where do you get your bones, bugs and specimens?
The majority of the bones I use come from hiking. If you understand an animals habits, you can find their trash. You'll even find bones in small urban parks. I also work with homesteaders, people who live off the land, who supply me with animal parts that they don't use. That way the whole animal is utilized and nothing goes to waste. Pet shops, animal breeders, fishmongers, small farms, butchers, aquarium shops and butterfly houses are another resource. As with any supply and demand, you will find things available online. ALWAYS inspect what you expect to ensure the items are ethically sourced. Ask questions. If they're ethically sourced, there will be lines of open communication.

I found a dead bird, will you make me something with it?
First, put the bird down. Native birds are illegal to posses, even if you found them dead, even if its just a feather or old nest. Check out the Migratory Bird Act https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migratory_Bird_Treaty_Act_of_1918
Game birds are legal to have but may require some paperwork depending on the specimen. Occasionally I will have something come in from a different country, of which I have the import paperwork for.

Do you use beetles to clean your bones?
If I process roadkill, I utilize the naturally occurring carrion beetles outside, along with all the other insects and the elements. I do have a beetle tank to process the bodies of animals that I taxidermy to keep the bones articulated. Check out the video of my domesticated dermestid colony. |
Subscribe to my YouTube channel to watch live stream of my beetle tank, taxidermy, events, foraging and more. |
